Plenty of Wisconsin folks love a good dairy breakfast, those mornings of getting out extra early on a June morning to visit with friends and celebrate the long tradition of the state’s dairy industry. Who can pass up standing in lines for a plate heaped with cheese curds, pancakes, butter, sausages and applesauce?
And did we mention the cheese curds? There can never be enough cheese curds.
The morning’s most important decisions should be which table to sit at and whether to choose milk chocolate or white. But grander decisions are being made this spring, as the coronavirus outbreak is forcing dairy-breakfast organizing committees to decide whether to hold their breakfasts.
The decisions are important because of the dairy-industry promotion and the community camaraderie. They’re also important fundraisers for organizations such as FFA, 4-H and others.
Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin announced in March that it wouldn’t be distributing promotional material to breakfast organizers this year because of the coronavirus social distancing. Organizers of the Dunn County breakfast this week announced that they were cancelling this year’s event.
There are few indications about how many breakfasts might continue on this year, as planned. But, at least in Dunn County’s case, there are assurances that their breakfast will return in 2021.
When all is finished with the coronavirus, rural Wisconsin is sure to return to celebrating in big ways through their beloved dairy breakfasts — whether it be in 2020 or 2021.
And, the cheese curds won’t be forgotten.
