Marda Angus of Lodi were named the 2020 Wisconsin Cattlemen of the Year Friday night in Wisconsin Dells. The family, a part of beef production since 1940, were recognized during the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Annual Winter Conference.
The foundation of the Marda Angus Farms herd began in 1940 when Dave Quam bought his first Angus female to start his 4-H project. The goal of Marda Angus has been consistent for the past seven decades – striving to raise cattle that meet the needs of commercial cattlemen as well as purebred producers across the country.
Today, Marda Angus has 170 purebred Angus cows, along with 900 crop acres. Many of the cow families found at Marda Angus date back to the herd’s original foundation females.
Currently there are 3 genertations of Quam’s actively involved in the daily chores and routine, and they also recently received the Century Farm Award. Terry Quam has served as past president of the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association and as their legislative liason for nearly 20 years. Ardel Quam has been a past president of World Beef Expo and serves as the WI Cattlemen’s representative on the WBE board today. She’s also worked with the WI Beef Council as a compliance officer, and will be retiring this year as Wisconsin Angus Secretary after 40 years.
Children Cody, Brady and Bailey also stay connected to the operation. Cody is involved as a partner at Marda Angus and is also a member of the World Beef Expo board. Bailey is employed at the Wisconsin Veterinary Medicine Association. Brady is a full-time trucker and has recently been appointed to the Lodi Agriculture Fair Board.
Marda Angus willingly hosts visitors from around the world, and will be acting as one of the hosts for the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Summber Beef Tour June 27th.
