October is suicide awareness month. But, even with more awareness many can still feel consumed by depression and negative thoughts. The need to reach out is there, but it can be difficult to work past the fear of judgement.
Dr. Michael Rosmann is a psychologist who was working at the University of Virginia in the 1980’s, when he moved to Iowa. He now focuses on serving the agricultural population in regards to their behavioral health. He wants to break the stigma of mental health, and make it more about behavioral health.
He emphasizes the need to reach out and talk about what is distressing those who are struggling. But he also notes that there are many things we can’t change or control, but the one thing we can control is our behavior. Dr. Rosmann encourages those who are struggling to find those behaviors that help them heal.
