Wisconsin’s corn crop is rated 64 percent good to excellent this week — down 3 percent from last week, according to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture Crop Progress Report.
Contributors to the reporter said 78 percent of the corn has reached the dough stage, which is 19 days behind last year; 47 percent of the crop has dented, which is 17 days behind a year ago. Two percent of the crop is considered mature.
The state soybean crop is rated 67 percent good to excellent this week, which also down 3 percent from last week. But like corn, the beans are wa behind the normal schedule: 88 percent of the plants are setting pods, which is 28 days behind last year; 33% are turning color, which is 12 days behind, and 6 percent of the plants are dropping leaves — also 12 days behind the norm.
The report said Wisconsin farmers have made 90 percent of their
third hay crop and 38 percent of their fourth-crop hay. They’ve harvested 5 percent of their corn silage and 82 percent of their oats, and planted 10 percent of their winter wheat.
Topsoil moisture this week is rated 98 percent adequate to surplus, with southeastern parts of the state reporting dry conditions.
