With the heat index reaching into the triple digits today, its important to make sure that you are keeping cool and safe during this heat. As a human getting out of the sun isn’t too hard, and carrying a water bottle is an easy way to stay hydrated. Heck, you can even jump in a pool or go somewhere with air conditioning to stay cool.
Animals, especially livestock, don’t have a lot of those luxuries. But there are things you can do to help keep your animals as comfortable as possible during these extreme heat waves.
Bernie O’Rourke is the UW Extension Youth Livestock Specialist, and she put together an informational fact sheet with what to look out for, and how to help keep your animals cool. These tips are geared to those who are showing animals at the fair, but many of these tips can be used for you animals at home as well.
