Milk production in Wisconsin during May 2019 totaled 2.65 billion pounds, down less than 1 percent from the previous May, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report. The average number of milk cows during May, at 1.27 million head, was the same as last month but down 5,000 from last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,090 pounds, the same as last May.
Milk production in the 24 major States during May totaled 18.1 billion pounds, down 0.1 percent from May 2018. April revised production, at 17.6 billion pounds, was up 0.5 percent from April 2018. The April revision represented an increase of 195 million pounds or 1.1 percent from last month’s preliminary 23-State production estimate.
Production per cow in the 24 major States averaged 2,062 pounds for May, 11 pounds above May 2018. The number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major States was 8.79 million head, 55,000 head less than May 2018, but 5,000 head more than April 2019.
