After a slow start to the harvest the Wisconsin corn production is forecast at 531 million bushels according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Crop Production report. If realized, this will be Wisconsin’s second largest corn production, trailing only 2016’s 573 million bushels.
Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 177 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from the October 1 forecast but, up 3 bushels per acre from last year. If realized, this will be the second highest yield on record behind the 178 bushels per acre in 2016. An estimated 3.00 million acres will be harvested for grain.
Then soybean production in the badger state is forecast at a record 107 million bushels. If realized, this will be fractionally above the previous record set in 2016. The yield is forecast at 49.0 bushels per acre, 1.0 bushel below the October 1 forecast. Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 2.20 million acres with 2.19 million acres to be harvested.
The fall Wisconsin potato production is forecast at 26.8 million hundredweight (cwt), down 6 percent from 2017. The potato yield is forecast at 400 cwt per acre, down 25 cwt from 2017. Wisconsin potato growers expect to harvest 67,000 acres, unchanged from last year.
Now taking a look at U.S. crop production the report found that U.S. corn production is forecast at 14.6 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the October forecast but up less than 1 percent from last year. Corn yields are expected to average 178.9 bushels per acre, down 1.8 bushels from the October forecast but up 2.3 bushels from 2017. If realized, this will be the highest yield and second highest production on record for the United States. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 81.8 million acres, unchanged from the previous estimate but down 1 percent from 2017.
Soybean production is forecast at a record 4.60 billion bushels, down 2 percent from the October forecast but up 4 percent from last year. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 52.1 bushels per acre, down 1.0 bushel from last month but up 2.8 bushels from last year. Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at 88.3 million acres, down slightly from last month.
