Large corn and soybean harvest expected for Wisconsin. According to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Crop Production report, Wisconsin corn production is forecast at 537 million bushels . If realized, this will be Wisconsin’s second largest corn production, trailing only 2016’s 573 million bushels. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average a record 179.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from the September 1 forecast but up 5.0 bushels per acre from last year. If realized, this will be the highest yield on record surpassing the 178.0 bushels per acre in 2016. An estimated 3.00 million acres will be harvested for grain.
Wisconsin soybean production is forecast at a record 110 million bushels. This would be the highest production on record with 2.25 million bushels more than the previous record of 107 million bushels set in 2016. The yield is forecast at a record 50.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from the September 1 forecast, but 2.50 bushels per acre above 2017. Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 2.20 million acres with 2.19 million acres to be harvested.
Not to mention the report found that production of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures for hay in the dairy state is forecast at 2.73 million tons. Based on conditions as of October 1, yield is expected to average 3.00 tons per acre, unchanged from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 910,000 acres, up 50,000 acres from 2017. Production of other hay is forecast at 819,000 tons. Yield is expected to average 2.10 tons per acre, down 0.20 ton from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 390,000 acres, unchanged from 2017 acres.
