
The latest Chickens and Eggs report from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is out. The report recorded that in the month of December 2017, Wisconsin egg production totaled 171 million eggs. This production rate increased by 9 percent from November 2017 and was up 17 percent from last year.
The report also showed that the average number of all layers on hand in the badger state during December 2017 was 6.83 million. This record high number is up slightly from November 2017 and up 21 percent from last year. Then the eggs per 100 layers for December was 2,505 this is up 9 percent from November but down 3 percent from December 2016.
While Wisconsin egg production increased in December, the United States egg production during the same period totaled 9.07 billion during. This total egg production was down slightly from last year. Production included 7.94 billion table eggs, and 1.14 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.06 billion were broiler-type and 80.3 million were egg-type.
The total number of layers in the U.S. during December 2017 averaged 382 million, up 1 percent from last year. The December egg production per 100 layers was 2,375 eggs, down 2 percent from December 2016.
Looking into chickens and egg production as we began the new year there were 382 million layers in the United States on January 1, 2018, up 1 percent from last year. The 382 million layers consisted of 321 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 56.8 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.33 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. The rate of lay per day for these chickens on January 1, 2018, averaged 75.8 eggs per 100 layers. This was down 2 percent from January 1, 2017.
