Starting Feb.5, 2018, the University of Wisconsin-Extension and Wisconsin DNR will be co-hosting a series of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) Update meetings throughout the state.
A CAFO is defined by the EPA, as a facility with more than 1000 animal units. An animal unit is defined as an animal equivalent of 1000 pounds live weight and equates to 1000 head of beef cattle, 700 dairy cows, 2500 swine weighing more than 55 lbs, 125 thousand broiler chickens, or 82 thousand laying hens or pullets.
The meetings are meant to inform and update WPEDES permitted CAFO owners, managers, nutrient management plan writers and engineers. In a recent interview with the Wisconsin Farm Report Farm Director Pam Jahnke, Kevin Erb, UW-Extension, Conservation Professional Training Program Director said,
“We decided with the update meetings to get not only the large farms in the state involved but also their nutrient management consultants, their engineers, and the agency staff together to go over what is expected and some common problems we have been seeing.”
The update meetings will provide attendees with information on new policies for CAFOs, proper spill responses, manure hauling, day-storage calculations, a DNR panel and a breakout session on a local topic.
“We have asked the county extension agents in each host county to actually put together a certain topic on what the local concerns and needs are. No matter if you talk about human resource management, automated calf feeding, or dealing with nutrient management in corn it is based on local needs and it varies by location,” said Erb.
To attend a session registration is required along with a registration fee of $35, or $45 after the early registration period. The registration includes either breakfast or lunch.
