The holiday season is truly one of the best times of the year. It is full of fun, food, family, and tradition. One of the best ways to celebrate the holiday season is by spending time with loved ones at holiday events and activities. This weekend on Saturday December 2, families in Wisconsin can be apart of a holiday tradition that is fun for all ages. This event is the Norskedalen Nature & Heritage Center Old-Fashioned Christmas Event.
The Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center is located in Coon Valley, Wisconsin just outside of La Crosse. Norskedalen include over 400 acres of wooded coulee, goat prairie, springs, creek and fields, crossed by over 5 miles of nature trails. It also includes the Bekkum Homestead which features the original log buildings built by Norwegian immigrants to the region. The homestead consists of the Engum house, summer kitchen, the Volden stone springhouse, Bakke corn crib, granary, chicken coop, Moilien machine shed, Gundersen-Running tobacco barn, Bekkum barn, cow barn, blacksmith shop and storage shed. All the buildings are arranged in a Norwegian traditional horseshoe-shaped ‘tun’ or farmstead.
In an effort to celebrate the Norwegian heritage of the area the Norskedalen Center holds their Old-Fashioned Christmas Event each year. The event will even include an opportunity to try traditional Norwegian food and baked goods that would be found at a holiday celebration.
“We have had people baking all day to prepare the delicious Norwegian baked goods for the Old-Fashioned Christmas Event,” said Lori Dubczak, the Executive Director for the Norskedalen Nature & Heritage Center. “We will even have a Lafsa bar where attendees can put any dessert topping on their Lafsa they want because what would a Norwegian Christmas be without Lafsa.”
The Old-Fashioned Christmas Event will also have three areas to make homemade Christmas ornaments. Attendees will even have the opportunity to make ornaments with the Center’s Blacksmith at their shop on the grounds.
“The Old-Fashioned Christmas Event is a great way to pay tribute to the Norwegian culture and those who have come before us and paved the way for where we are today,” said Dubczak.
The Norskedalen Nature & Hertiage Center Old-Fashioned Christmas Event will be held Saturday December 2, 20017. The event will run from, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission for the event is $6 for Adult, $3 for a child, and $15 for a family.
