Summertime celebrations like father’s Day often include grilling out, while grilling can be intimidating Dr. Sindelar at UW says the most important part of grilling is choosing the right meat and then taking your time while preparing it.
To take the reins and be your party’s “Grill master” one must remember:
Preparation:
- Select meat or meats that you and your guests will enjoy
- Marinate or season meat choices hours in advance of going on the grill for cooking
- Insure plenty of gas if you’re cooking with propane and plenty of charcoal if that’s your style
- Start grill and warm up, advice to bring grill up beyond the temperature that you want to cook at then bring back down to optimal temp
- Clean your grilling surface off before and after preheating.
Cleanliness and safety
- The meat choices that you purchase or pull out of your freezer should be brought up to cooking temperature in your refrigerator and not just left on the counter to get too warm
- Plastic or latex gloves are a good idea to insure your hands don’t contaminate cooked and non cooked meats
- You should also have two cutting boards again to minimize the opportunity of cross contamination between cooked and no cooked meats
- Chicken, pork and beef need to stay away from each other before the cooking process
- Paper towels are a plus as they can be used to quickly wipe up a mess, also be sure to have plenty of hot water and soap available to wash your hands
Tools you will need
- Yes you need all the most recent tools that are available at the hardware store and then again you may only need a fork and tongs it’s all up to what the individual that is manning the grill wants
- Thermometer, for the longest time individuals have forgone the use of a thermometer as “just looking at the meat was good enough” well take all the guess work out of grilling thicker pieces of meat by getting yourself a thermometer and remember once you pull your meat off the grill its still cooking on the inside
- Rubs and marinades, the best part of grilling in the fact that it is very personalized as there is many ways to make your cuts of meat taste great and then again, you can mess your barbeque up many different ways as well
